A community is where a group of people live and work together. Ask children: What kinds of places are there in a community? Have children name the kinds of places a community has. List the places for the group.http://www.ngsp.com/Portals/0/Downloads/57213_WOL_LLV_Emergent_PMC_lr.pdf Think about the places in your community and why they're special.

Discussion and Research Ideas. Use these ideas to create your scrapbook pages.

  • Have students discuss the criteria for World Heritage Sites and debate the importance of designating and protecting resources of “outstanding universal value.” Also research government buildings in your own community.
  • Research local resources such as parks, historic sites, monuments, cemeteries and local landmarks. Consider what roles they play in your community.
  • Look at the geological wonders in your local area. Are these wonders being preserved and if not, should they be?
  • Compile a list of historic structures in your community and research their history. If possible, arrange to visit one.
  • What natural, physical features are around your community? Do you live in flat prairie, near the ocean or in a mountainous area? What geography makes your area unique?
